Command line

The install script adds a clio command. It starts the CLIO backend when needed, opens an interface, and gives you commands to manage the backend. The backend itself is a separate program, clio-agent, described below.

Command What it does
clio (or clio attach) Starts the backend if needed, then opens the terminal UI. If this command started the backend, closing the terminal UI stops it.
clio --web (or clio web) Starts the backend and opens http://127.0.0.1:17800/ in your browser.
clio desktop (or clio --desktop) Launches the desktop app. Linux and macOS only, and it needs CLIO_DESKTOP_BIN set to the app’s binary.
clio start Starts the backend in the background, then waits up to about 90 seconds for it to become healthy.
clio stop Stops the backend and the tool processes it started.
clio restart Stops, then starts.
clio status (or clio ps) Shows the install prefix, port, process id, health, and log locations.
clio logs [N] Follows the backend and terminal UI logs, starting with the last N lines (40 by default).
clio update Upgrades clio-agent to the latest release. Linux and macOS only.
clio doctor Checks the install: backend binary, terminal UI binary, the port, and the launcher (plus curl on macOS and Linux). Exits with an error if something required is missing.
clio sandbox status Shows whether the OS write fence is active. See Permissions and sandbox.
clio sandbox setup Sets up the OS write fence. Windows needs this once.
clio report Prints versions, environment, health, and the last 40 lines of each log, for pasting into a bug report.
clio completion bash or zsh Prints a shell completion script.
clio uninstall [--purge] [--yes] Uninstalls CLIO. See Uninstall.
clio help Shows help.

Shell completion:

Terminal window
clio completion bash >> ~/.bashrc
clio completion zsh > "${fpath[1]}/_clio"

On Windows the command is clio.ps1 (with a clio.cmd wrapper), and it supports a subset of the commands above:

  • Supported: clio (or clio attach), clio web (or --web), start, stop, restart, status (or ps), logs, sandbox, doctor, report, completion, uninstall, and help.
  • Not available: update and desktop. To update, rerun the install script.
  • The uninstall flags are -Purge and -Yes.
  • The backend writes its output to separate files, clio-server.log and clio-server.err.log.

The backend listens on 127.0.0.1 port 17800. Set CLIO_PORT to use a different port. The health check is GET /v1/health.

File Contents
clio-server.<hostname>.log in the install prefix Backend output on macOS and Linux. The log name includes your host name so a home folder shared across machines keeps one log per machine.
clio-server.log and clio-server.err.log in the install prefix Backend output on Windows.
gact-stderr.log in the install prefix Errors from the terminal UI.

Set CLIO_LOG to write the backend log to a different file on macOS and Linux. The install prefix is ~/.local/share/clio on macOS and Linux, and %LOCALAPPDATA%\clio on Windows.

On macOS and Linux, the clio command checks PyPI for a newer clio-agent at most about once a day and prints a one-line hint. To turn the check off, set CLIO_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1. See Data and network.

clio-agent is the backend program that the clio command runs.

Command What it does
clio-agent serve Runs the backend in the foreground. Options: --host (default 127.0.0.1) and --port (default 8100).
clio-agent doctor Runs deeper checks than clio doctor: file access policy, model provider, memory store, tool gateway, and API. Add --json for machine-readable output.
clio-agent sandbox status and clio-agent sandbox setup The same sandbox commands as clio.
clio-agent --version Prints the installed version.

Inside the terminal UI, /doctor runs the health checks and /mcp works with tool servers.
